about

A.J. Holmes - The King Of The New Electric Hi-Life
(no: 40 in the Spex Magazine top 50 albums of 2007)
was released on the 20th August 2007 by Pingiung records.

It was the first solo album that A.J. Holmes release under his real name, after releasing an album and an e.p. under the artist name Vanishing Breed

The King Of The New Electric Hi-Life is Holmes’s unique blend of African music and Electronic Pop.

"Africa and Europe meet again with such an original freshness; my tip for album of the year“ : DE:BUG

"Effectively uplifting" is what the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit called his debut album, "Between Arrival and Departure" (Pingipung 8th November 2005) and rated it “album of the year 05“. Since then, Holmes then went on to refining his technique, and through the use of digital technology he managed to arrive at something totally and delightfully unique: the New Electric Hi-Life.

The story of the New Electric Hi-Life: African musician and teacher Folo Graff emigrated from Free town, Sierra Leone, West Africa moved to the birth place of A.J. Holmes (the East End of London) in 1976. In 1999 they became neighbours and a year later Graff started to teach Holmes Palm Wine High Life guitar music. Mixing this with his background in electric pop Holmes developed irresistible dance tracks like "Lumumba; Berlin Sex City", instrumentals with a fragile swing like "Schloss Lanke", pop tunes with earworm qualities like "For Export Only", or heart-warming love songs like "Nino" and his songs are crowned by his own emotional and self-ironic lyrics.

Previous releases as Vanishing Breed:

2005: Between Arrival and Departure L.P. Label: Pingipung

Quotes:

"A.J. Holmes has managed a somewhat visionary merging of palm wine guitar stylings, Berlin tourist travelogue, and Franz Fanon deconstruction." : EX BERLINER

"Perfect timing!": INTRO

"A breath taking beauty!": MARTIN PETERSDORF (Fritz FM)
